AAFES rumbles to head of the pack in Harley-Davidson sales and safety

DALLAS – The Soldiers, Airmen, Marines and Sailors that defend America’s freedom clearly appreciate the freedom of the open road as Harley-Davidson has named the Army & Air Force Exchange Service’s (AAFES’) Exchange New Car Sales their top selling retailer of motorcycles.

To commemorate the milestone, Harley-Davidson and Exchange New Car Sales will present AAFES Commander Brig. Gen. Keith Thurgood with a pair of specialized, military-specific Harley-Davidson gas tanks in a ceremony on Tuesday, Dec. 4. The Army version bears the official seal on the top with a painting of tanks in the desert on the side. The Air Force edition features the service seal as well as a painting of fighter jets on the side.

“While we’re excited to be the world’s number one Harley-Davidson retailer of motorcycles, we are equally as proud of this command’s efforts to deliver the equipment, knowledge and resources needed to ride responsibly,” said Vic Stephenson, Vice President, Services and Vending.“A host of proactive AAFES and ENCS efforts arm troops’ who choose to spend their free time on two wheels with the tools needed to ride safe.”

Recognizing that safety is relative to readiness, ENCS has developed a “Cycle Safe” program and previously provided training material and DVDs to installation safety offices around the world. Furthermore, authorized shoppers who purchase and take delivery of a motorcycle through ENCS are eligible for a reimbursement of up to $200 for an industry approved Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) course. This added benefit is provided as another initiative to promote motorcycle safety and encourage safe riding with military riders.

ENCS has been selling Harley-Davidson motorcycles since 1970. In 2006, they sold more than 3,450 motorcycles. By comparison, on a worldwide basis, only five Harley-Davidson dealerships sold more than 1,500 units last year, with none reaching 2,000 units in sales.
